hundreds of people have said this already but I don't agree with the premise that "being raised using modern technology makes people better at technology" in fact it's probably the opposite. modern tablets and chromebooks and whatever have gotten so shiny and hyperoptimized that they implicitly discourage people from learning troubleshooting skills.

#this post brought to you by #a stupid instagram comment of the 'not letting your 3-year-old have a tablet is stunting his ability to use tech😡' variety #get real! playing app store games on a sticky tablet confers no useful computer knowledge!#things that may actually be helpful in fostering an ability to use computers well (based on my own experiences):#giving children chances to solve their own problems #encouraging logic and math puzzles (appropriately complex jigsaw puzzles; sudoku & minesweeper; Encyclopedia Brown & similar books)#encouraging hobbies that involve making physical objects (woodworking; leatherworking; sewing; crocheting; knitting)#non-trivial research skills including assessing source quality! (this can tie into the hobbies thing if you play your cards right)#[however for credentials all I've got is 'undergrad compsci TA at a pretty decent university' so take this with a grain of salt lol]#[can't say which though. say no to self-doxxing]
